The 1982 and 1986 World Cup hero had been in and out of hospital since August this year due to internal bleeding. It is said he died from septic shock as a result of an infection.

The midfield genius was considered as one of the most creative players of his generation. He won 60 caps for the Brazil national side, scoring 22 goals. Most of his football career was spent at Brazillian giants Corinthians.
Socrates graduated as a medical student during the early years of his football career and was aptly nicknamed The Doctor. Like most Brazillian stars,he inspired a lot of young Zimbabwean players especially due to his performance in the 1982 world cup.
