Undersea Cable Break Affects Internet Services
So many of you in Zimbabwe may have been getting limited or no Internet access from your provider since Friday.
First of all we found out that there was an upstream link that had been damaged. At the time it didn’t sound bad. We got little Internet, enough to update the blog, check mail, nothing too special. For other users, who were not so lucky like those on uMax they have been completely down since then. Not their fault, really.
Now it turns out that the problem is a bit on the major side. You see, SEACOM who provide undersea cable internet connectivity suffered a fibre break. For the uninitiated, there is a problem that is really bad and they are trying to fix it. So it is not anything that we can do from down here. This problem affects services in Africa, Middle East and Asia.
About when they will fix it, some sources like Consumerizim quote a guy who says it could take up to two weeks to get back to full capacity. When they will have something up running at least we are not sure.
Right now we are pretty much waiting for godot.
At least ZOL has us up still. Life without Internet is weird.
