Facebook using artificial intelligence to combat suicide on its platform
Facebook is testing a tool which will use artificial intelligence to pick up whether someone is suicide risk or not.
It has become an emergent situation following the Facebook Live suicide phenomenon.
The feature is being tested in the United States only at present. Tools that allow users to flag worrying posts have been made available but the company wants to take every step possible to deal with the second leading cause of death in the world for people between ages 16 and 29.
In his manifesto this past January Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged there was a problem and steps would be taken to ensure safety:
There have been terribly tragic events — like suicides, some live streamed — that perhaps could have been prevented if someone had realized what was happening and reported them sooner. Going forward, there are even more cases where our community should be able to identify risks related to mental health, disease or crime.
These are the first steps we see.
