Zimbabwe’s Blind Cricket Commentator
Dean du Plessis is probably one of the world most unique sports commentators simply because he is blind.
It is said Dean relies on his ears to tell what is happening on the cricket field.Doubting Thomas’s have questioned his abilities claiming that he is fed information during a match. Dean says he uses his acute hearing to listen to sounds made by players and the noise made by the crowd.
Dean du Plessis was born with tumors on both retinas of his eyes which made him blind. Although blind commentators are certainly rare, there are a few around the world.
In addition to radio and television commentary, Dean also does sports bulletins and a newspaper column which he writes on his voice-enabled mobile phone.
Dean has done cricket commentary for almost 11 years.
