Youngsters Ngarava, Mumba drafted into squad for Afghanistan series
19 year-old left arm seamer Richard Ngarava and the prodigious Carl Mumba have been added to the squad for the one-day series against Afghanistan which kicks off on Thursday in Harare.
Ngarava impressed at the 2016 ICC Under-19 World Cup and only made List A debut earlier this month against Afghanistan A.
Mumba has impressed with the ball since his test and ODI cap late last year and looks to continue his development in what is a side brimming with youth.
The selectors last week announced a 14-man side with the two slots left for players who impressed during Pro50 matches held over the weekend.
It will be interesting to see who they choose to open with given the likes of Hamilton Masakadza, Vusi Sibanda, Brian Chari and Chamu Chibhabha have been left out. There was an experiment for a game in the ‘A’ series with wicket-keeper Peter Moor but it remains to be seen if this will persist with this.
The fans have been calling for some sort of change and it seems as if the selectors have responded. Against a cunning Afghanistan side it will remain to be see whether this will work. This is the time that seniors like captain Graem Cremer, Elton Chigumbura, Sikandar Raza and Craig Ervine earn their keep.
