Late Penalty Sinks Brave Zimbabwe

A late late penalty from Egypt’s Mohammed Aboutrika was what was needed to beat a brave Zimbabwe in a 2014 World Cup Qualifier in Alexandria.

Zimbabwe had done well to come back from a 64th minute Hosny Abd Rabo free kick when Knowledge Musona struck a beauty that even had former skipper Peter Ndlovu in the dugout on his feet.

Zimbabwe put a committed performance and every so often in the first half were saved by Washington Arubi in goal.

Coach Klaus Dieter Pagels would have been proud of his charges as they were always calm and collected on the ball although the midfield lacked creativity.

Zimbabwe will be gutted to have lost this game especially in the manner that it happened. Under pressure,  Augustine Mbara made a tackle he didn’t need to and brought down an Egyptian attacker in the box. It was a penalty and the veteran Aboutrika made no mistake placing it just beyond Arubi to the keeper’s right.

Brave and committed, but a loss all the same.

A lot to take away from this match. The heart, the drive, the passion.
