Drogba Earns His Place In Soccer History

Of the all emotions soccer fans go through nothing compares to a player missing a penalty that probably could have won the game for his team.

Sunday’s AFCON final against Zambia resulted in a sweet victory for Zambia and Southern Africa but is going to take a long time for Didier Drogba to forget.

As one of the senior players of the Ivorian team the burden to be exemplary wore even heavier for Drogba. Yet he failed in the cruelest way possible, by missing a penalty after 70 minutes of play. A goal could have made it difficult for a Zambian comeback.

The reality of penalties is that responsibility lies squarely on the kicker no matter how good the keeper may be. The reality of this miss will probably haunt Drogba for some time.

Yet this is not the first time he has missed a crucial penalty. In the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations, final, Ivory Coast played Egypt; Drogba took the ninth penalty and had to score to keep Ivory Coast in contention but Egyptian keeper El Hadari saved. It is as if once the finger of failure points at a player the curse can last for a long time. Asamoah Gyan can attest to this.

This is the strongest Ivory Coast will ever be in a long time and Drogba also knows this was probably his last shot at an African title. If Drogba had hoped to undo the nightmare of Cairo 2006 then last Sunday was just not the day.

Penalty shootouts are always a brutal way to end a game because they are lost rather than won.

If its any consolation to Drogba he is not alone. He has just earned permanent membership to an elite group of stars who miss when the whole world expected them to score.
