CRICKET: Zimbabwe Beat Sri Lanka In World Cup Warm-up
The Zimbabwe cricket team registered a morale-boosting seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in a warm-up match for the upcoming ODI world cup in New Zealand and Australia.
After the first match down-under against New Zealaned was cancelled due to rain Dav Whatmore’s boys needed to get full game under their belt in preparation for the daunting task that is the opening match against tournament favourites South Africa.
Zimbabwe restricted former champions Sri Lanka to 279/8 with Sean Williams being the pick of the bowlers taking 3 wickets from his allocated 10 overs conceding 35 runs. Other wickets came from Solomon Mire, Tinashe Panyangara, Prosper Utseya and Tawanda Mpariwa.
Zimbabwe looked to be in trouble early on when Sikandar Raza and the in-form Chamu Chibhabha were removed within 5 runs of each other. Former captain and linchpin Brendan Taylor (63 off 68) then joined Hamilton Musakadza (117 off 119) to steady the innings in a 127 run partnership. Williams then came on to see of the match with 51 off 46 balls to give the Chevrons a huge boost as they mobe on to Seddon Park, Hamilton.
It was a gutsy performance from a side coach Whatmore said was tired of losing matches.
The signs are good. Get in there boys!
