Finance Minister Biti Wants US Sanctions Rethink

Finance Minister Tendai Biti has told the United States that disengagement is not the best method of dealing with troubled states.

He was quoted in New Zimbabwe as saying:

You must engage strategically to assist the people of Zimbabwe.

He was speaking in Washington on Thursday at the Atlantic Council. He also added that the ‘targeted sanctions’ hurt the ordinary people more than it did the people it claimed to harm. This is a position that President Robert Mugabe’s party ZANU-PF has been taking since they were imposed over 10 years ago.

It is good to see an official as high up the MDC-T structures as Minister Biti finally speaking out frankly against sanctions especially on a visit outside the country. The calls for removal of sanctions by his party has so far been lukewarm since they joined ZANU-PF in a transitional government.
