Barbados Getting Rid Of The Queen As Head Of State
Barbados will in November next year follow Dominican Republic as well as Trinidad and Tobago in removing Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state.
In its place will be a ceremonial president. It will not affect its standing in the Commonwealth.
The proposal will need to go through the lower and upper house so it still has some way to go.
Jamaica made murmurings about moving in the same direction when Portia Simpson Miller was elected as prime minister three years ago. Since then not much movement has been made.
For Barbados this will come on the 50th anniversary of its independence from Britain.
Self-determination it is then.
