Zvenyika Makonese Dies in Car Crash – Reports

Former Zimbabwe and Orlando Pirates defender Zvenyika Makonese has died from injuries he sustained after he was involved in his accent on his way back to South Africa.

He had recently been released by the treble-winning Buccaneers after he had seen very little action during the last season.

Makonese had had a difficult time in the last couple of seasons with reports of personal troubles that led to indiscipline that he had been dealing with in the past couple of years.

Strangely enough, a year ago there had been reports on Facebook claiming that he had died, again from a car accident. Ominously they came as a prophecy as the former Warriors defender is no more.

Makonese left Shabanie Mine in 2004 for Santos where he spent five seasons before joining Pirates. In 2006 after impressing with the Warriors at the Africa Cup of Nations he was reported to be subject to interest from European clubs including Stoke City but nothing came of it.

Our condolences go out to his family and we thank him for his service to Zimbabwe.
