Zimbabwe and Botswana finally agree on something

Zimbabwe and Botswana have been trading insults for a while now. Trading is not quite an exact term. Let’s say, Botswana has been hurling words at Zimbabwe for minute and Zimbabwe has generally ignored its western neighbour. Not like they can do much can they. Botswana, that is.

So when it was revealed that somewhere under the cover of darkness, the two had signed a Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement and even this was not cut and dry. It only worked on investments made after the signing of the agreement.

According to the local government rag, The Herald, this was to ‘fears that if the investment pact applied in retrospect it would negate the country’s land reform programme.’

I guess Zimbabwe got its way there.

A similar agreement was recently signed with South Africa
