US, UK, France Schizophrenic on Lybia

United States President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Nicholas Sarkozy released a statement on Lybia yesterday.

It was full of the usual rhetoric, the standard buzz words. Protecting the people, united front, democracy are some of the usual suspects.

Now they went full-on and quoted UN Security Council Resolution 1973, a truncheon handed to them by the United Nations to bomb the living daylights out of anything that liked Gaddafi so that there would in the end be fewer Gaddafi supporters than there were, opposition supporters.

Now then they get shirty.

..it is impossible to imagine a future for Libya with Gaddafi in power….

… so long as Gaddafi is in power, Nato and its coalition partners must maintain their operations so that civilians remain protected and the pressure on the regime builds. Then a genuine transition from dictatorship to an inclusive constitutional process can really begin, led by a new generation of leaders. For that transition to succeed, Colonel Gaddafi must go, and go for good.

I don’t know about you but isn’t that effectively bombing so as to remove Muammar Gaddafi. You can’t say we are simply protecting citizens and not looking to effect regime change and then say we are not going to stop bombing until there is regime change. The two matters simply don’t exist in the same space.

What has effectively been sanctioned by way of that letter is a sponsored coup d’etat under the guise of some PR’ed savagery.  It is either that they think the world is full of fools which makes them economical with morality or that they are simply schizophrenic.

Schizophrenia makes me feel better because at least there is no malice involved but convenient inconsistencies. That makes me sleep better at night.

The other option, is scary.
