Southern Africa Roars Zambia To AFCON Title

Zambia made a fitting tribute to their fallen comrades of 1993 with penalty win over Ivory Coast.

The match itself was a lifeless draw – bar the Gyan-esque Drogba moment where he missed penalty. Both teams played with fear and never really controlled the match. This played well into Zambia’s hands who were toothless up front but disciplined at the back.

Then came the penalties which went to sudden death and on the night, Chipolopolo were crowned champions.

What will be the story though was the way Southern Africa rallied behind Zambia to bring a trophy that has generally been bouncing north and west Africa to the region. They supported the Copper Bullets as if they were their own. We don’t know if that had to do with the prostitute incident last week. Goodness gracious, if that was the reaction to qualifying, we shudder to think what is happening now.

Social media was awash with people egging the team on and over the finish line.

For Didier Drogba and friends, it is hard luck but for tonight, Southern Africa celebrates.
