This could change the way we imagined early humans.

It is believed to have roamed the Cradle of Humankind between one and three million years ago. Scientists can’t quite pinpoint how old the fossils are. Prof John Hawks says this new discovery will be studied for decades.

The hominid has human-like features -especially the foot – but the brain is about the size of an orange. In spite of the small brain they are believed to have been capable of ┬árituals. If this is true then it might have us rethinking the idea of symbolic thought and ritual being a mere 200,000 years old.

H Naledi stood about 1.5m tall and weighed about 45kg.

Over 1,500 fossils have been discovered and there could be more.

What is to be human?
