Liberation Icon Brig Gen Hashim Mbita Dies
Tanzanian army general and southern African liberation struggle icon Brigadier General Hashim Mbita has died after a long illness.
The retired executive secretary of the Organisation of the African Unity (OAU) Liberation Committee died at the Lugalo Military Hospital.
He served on the committee from 1974 coordinating efforts to have southern Africa freed from colonial rule. His mission was accomplished when South Africa democratic elections were held in 1994. Citizens of Angola, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Mozambique can be thankful to the efforts of this man.
During the 34th Southern African Development Community (SADC) heads of state and government summit, Zimbabwe conferred the Royal Order of Munhumutapa on Mbita. At the same meeting the Hashim Mbita project was launched.
He was 74.
