It’s official. Weah set to win Liberia presidency

It looks to be finally official after running down some blind alleys.

George Weah

Africa’s first Ballon D’Or and World Footballer of the year winner George Tawlon Manneh Oppong Ousman Weah is set to become the next president of Liberia.

The country’s National Elections Commission announced that after 98.1% votes counted Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change had won 61.5% of the vote.

Opponent Joseph Boakai is far behind with 38.5%.

Weah, 51, will succeed Nobel Peace Prize Winner Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected female president, in Liberia’s first democratic handover since 1944.
