Draft Constitution Criminalises Homosexuality

Constitution Select Committee (Copac) co-chair Mr Edward Mkhosi (MDC) has said the final draft of Zimbabwe’s new constitution will criminalise homosexuality and ban same-sex marriage.

The subject has been contentious on social media with members of the Facebook group Proudly Zimbabwean firmly taking sides. The liberals have been pro-gay while the traditionalists have been  against it.

Mr Mkhosi said the non-inclusion of so-called gay rights was always expected as Zimbabwe is a nation founded on Christianity and tradition.

Co-chair Cde Munyaradzi Paul Mangwana (Zanu-PF) said pro-gay movements were left with egg on their faces after the public spoke against homosexuality.

Copac co-chair Mr Douglas Mwonzora (MDC-T), however, would not be drawn into discussing the matter, saying that they were  not allowed to discuss anything in the draft constitution, but I that anything that would be in the new constitution will be derived from the outreach programme.

As it stands this should not come as a surprise given the President’s stance on the matter as well the Prime Minister’s occasional position on it. Also an overwhelming majority of the electorate remains conservative even though a significantly higher percentage of those in the urban areas or diaspora will probably say that they have no issue with homosexuality.

The question is, what happens if a key minister is outed as gay? But then again, Alum Mpofu thought he was key…
