48 Kenyans Hacked To Death In Ethnic Clashes
Police in Kenya have said at least 48 Kenyans were hacked or burnt to death in ethnic clashes between the Pokomo and Orma peoples in the rural Tana River district.
The fights took place on Tuesday night. Of the dead 31 were women, 11 were children and there were 6 men. 34 were hacked t0 death while 14 were burnt.
At this point it is not clear what sparked the attack but the two groups have a history of violence between them. In 2001, 130 people were killed in fights over land between the two. Of late there had been a string of tit-for-tat killings.
This is the worst violence seen in Kenya since the bloody aftermath of elections four years ago.
