Family Demands 10 Beasts Before Burial Of Daughter
Two Gwanda families are at loggerheads after one of them demanded 10 beasts for their daughter who died recently from her boyfriend. The two were staying together.
Under most Zimbabwean customs if a woman is living with man and dies and no lobola has been paid, a penalty is levied by the family of the girl.
It is said that Thamsanqa Ndlovu and his now deceased girlfriend Christine Ndlovu had been living together for two years without the knowledge of their parents. They even had a four-month old child.
Christine died at Gwanda Provincial Hospital last week and her body remains at the mortuary.
Thamsanqa says he is not working and he has no idea where he will find the beasts or $5,000 as stipulated by Christine’s family.
Sadly this is an all-too common story in Zimbabwe right now. With the high prices of lobola standing in the way of love sometimes, couples are choosing to enter into domestic partnerships often without the knowledge of the families concerned.
It is obvious that Thamsanqa and Christine loved each other and their circumstances stood firmly in the way of a union between them. Imagine if people were reasonable when it came to these things.
