Dogs understand human speech – scientists

So if you ever wondered how your pooch behaved like a human sometimes science has the answer.

Dogs can understand human speech and are happiest when expressions are in an encouraging tone followed by actions. So words like ‘good boy’ and ‘well done’.

In fact it goes further after a world first test. MRI scans on 13 dogs show that their brains process language the same way that human beings do. The right side deals with emotion and the left processing meaning.

Lead researcher Dr Attila Andics, of Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest:

It is mainly the left hemisphere’s job to process word meaning, and the right hemisphere’s job to process intonation. The human brain not only separately analyses what we say and how we say it, but also integrates the two types of information, to arrive at a unified meaning. Our findings suggest that dogs can also do all that, and they use very similar brain mechanisms.

So next time you say voetsek to Bhoki know that he gets it. It is just a matter of time before they find out that he is a snitch too.

Oh man’s best friend and his little secret.
