While Zimbabwe’s family planning programme is among the best performers in Southern Africa, the country through the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Strategy (2016 – 2020) aims to increase modern Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (mCPR) from 59% to 68% by 2020 and reduce teenage pregnancy rate from 24% to 12% by 2020. In attaining the stated goals are three key strategic priorities that will drive the family planning agenda forward, thus, reducing teenage pregnancies, providing family planning services in integrated settings and increasing utilization of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC).
The promotion of contraceptive use and ensuring access to preferred contraceptive methods for women and couples is essential to securing the well-being and autonomy of women, while supporting the health and development of communities. The brand ambassador who appeals both to youths and mature ages, will come in handy in promoting contraceptive use amongst the reproductive health age groups including young people while ZNFPC ensures availability of preferred methods. Promotion, access and availability of contraceptives is of paramount importance to the government of Zimbabwe since contraceptive use has a positive effect in the reduction of unintended pregnancies, abortions and number of deaths amongst women during child birth.
Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council is a parastatal body under the Ministry of Health and Child Care mandated to provide reproductive health and family planning services in Zimbabwe and the promotion and implementation of population and development primary health care and other community-based development programmes relating to family health and for the integration and co-ordination of other relevant activities in Government departments, Non-governmental organizations and the Private sector.
