WiFi Could Affect Sperm Quality
A report in the venerable medical journal Fertility and Sterility claims that the use of the internet via Wi-Fi may decrease human sperm quality.
The study was done by Argentinean scientists who placed a few drops of sperm under a laptop connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi while downloading files. It was found that a quarter of the sperm were no longer swimming around, for instance, compared to just 14 percent from semen samples stored at the same temperature away from the computer.
And nine percent of the sperm showed DNA damage, three times more than the comparison samples. Conrado Avendano of Nascentis Medicina Reproductiva in Cordoba and colleagues places the blame on electromagnetic radiation generated during wireless communication.
The researchers claim that their findings suggest that the use of a laptop computer wirelessly connected to the internet and positioned near the male reproductive could be the cause of the low sperm quality.
A separate test with a laptop that was on, but not wirelessly connected, found negligible EM radiation from the machine alone. This research echoes the same findings done by other researchers who claim that even the use of cell-phones or sitting with a laptop balanced on the knees can cause sperm to be weak.
