You Don’t Realise You Need A Massage Until…

We have come across a lot people who suffer from strains in their necks and shoulders about town. Many of them get these spending too much time in front of the computer or general unhealthy posture.

Most people will say nothing about their condition and will generally labour through the pain. They will talk about the fact that they generally have back pains which limit their enjoyment of life. The condition deteriorates over time and soon enough walking becomes laboured.

Knowing black Zimbabweans we are fully aware that a visit to the doctor is done in the most extreme of cases so even when the back is about to snap in half, the remedy recommended is a painkiller and some sleep.

Now, from trawling the Internet we found out the a good massage doesn’t just make sure your muscles feel great. A study in 2010 showed that a Swedish massage changed a person biologically

Volunteers who received Swedish massage experienced significant decreases in levels of the stress hormone cortisol in blood and saliva, and in arginine vasopressin, a hormone that can lead to increases in cortisol. They also had increases in the number of lymphocytes, white blood cells that are part of the immune system.

So essentially what they are saying is that if you get a good massage, then it makes you feel better in general. So we visited a gym in Avondale, Harare called Total Health Zone. They happen to have a massage parlour in amongst their impressive array of service. They took time out to give us a tour of the place. It was interesting how they spoke of their total dedication to standards. Their focus was on wellness and all the right buzzwords that come with it.

Since we didn’t fancy the treadmill or the splits or any of the other awesome-looking facilities where people stretch all sorts of things we decided to test the skills of the masseuse whose name is Leticia. Yes, that is her name. Kind of makes you think of Rome, massages, saunas and that sort of thing doesn’t it.

And so Leticia did her thing, applying her skills to areas that we thought existed simply to make us look human and nothing beyond that. After that hour, the back felt young and human.

It was then that we realised that you don’t realise you need a massage until you get one.

Total Health Zone is found above Barclays Bank at Avondale Shopping centre.
