It’s International Men’s Day… Give Them A Break
19 November is designated as International Men’s Day every single year.
It coincides with World Toilet Day but we will ignore all the humour it comes with.
Some will think that it is a bit off that men have a special day since they tend to get a lot of free passes and that sort of thing. This may have some sort of truth but in reality it isn’t really like that.
The thing that makes it difficult for some to appreciate a day for men is the history. Women’s Day makes sense because they are coming from a position of repression so their is a history behind it all. The narrative is that men are the abusers and the rising stats on rape and inequality do not make them look good do they?
Says the official IMD site:
Objectives of International Men’s Day include a focus on men’s and boy’s health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting positive male role models. It is an occasion for men to celebrate their achievements and contributions, in particular their contributions to community, family, marriage, and child care while highlighting the discrimination against them.
The ideas is that there are positive role models out there. The news may paint men as rapists and the sort but that is not what all men are like. Those are the men this day is about. They are not angels but they make an effort to just do the right thing and work to make better societies. They don’t have to stand out so as to be the sort that can win awards. They just live right.
Having a day means we can celebrate and reinforce positive vibes about men. It allows younger men to see that it is cool to be positive about life.
Also it allows us to talk about issues to do with men’s health. There is an unspoken rise in all sorts of cancer affecting men in the country. Men are generally not the sort that think too much about health issues so a day like this means we start focusing on things that are buried underneath. This may be because of masculine roles we limited to. So you know, admitting one is not well and doing something about it is not the norm. Men will commit suicide over an issue because they are not meant to be ‘sissies’.
So for just a single day, give the average joe a break. Noone does.
