Is Gaddafi’s Son On His Way To Zimbabwe?
Numerous reports on the internet have surfaced speculating that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi may be making his way to Zimbabwe. This is in a bid to escape possible prosecution by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
In the interconnected web of African politics, this does not come as a surprise. His father, the late Brother Leader Muammar Gaddafi was at one point expected to escape to Zimbabwe at the hight of the Libyan conflict. Saif al-Islam who was largely tipped to succeed his father has been in hiding since the demise of the Gaddafi ruling family.
International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo claims Saif al-Islam will get a fair trail, but I dont think Saif al-Islam believes any word the ICC says . Many African governments have also argued that the ICC tends to focuses a bit too much on the goings on in African countries. Remember the case of one dude called Omar al-Bashir of Sudan, where some African countries just simply refused to heed the courts call to arrest him.
The Reports also claim that a group of mercinaries have offered to transport Saif across the continent to the safety of Harare. The Zimbabwe goverment has not made any official comment on the matter. If indeed these reports are true, its likely that Saif will not be turned away by the Zimbabwean government. It would be interesting to see what the implications of such an action would be to Zimbabwe’s foreign policy which already has a reputation that is best described as being defiant.
