Bulawayo City Workers Strike
Despite the setback caused by striking city workers, the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair began in Bulawayo on Tuesday.
An estimated 3,200 workers downed their tools and are demanding their unpaid salaries. Media reports claim that the city is broke.
New Zimbabwe reports that burst water pipes were not being attended to; rubbish lay uncollected and council-run clinics were turning patients away.
This year ZITF has been plagued by one challenge or the other. At some point it was reported that there was no one who had been identified to officially open the trade showcase.
News of the strike is kind of sad whole because the Trade Fair is one of the few things that could actually help the economy of Bulawayo improve.
Meanwhile city fathers are said to be having meetings to clear this issue. We certainly hope they sort their issues out.
