Legendary musician Ray Phiri dies
Iconic South African jazz musician Ray Phiri has died.
Phiri who had been diagnosed with lung cancer was admitted to Nelspruit Mediclinic and had been under the care of an oncologist.
He was 70.
Phiri collaborated with Paul Simon on the classic Graceland album, propelling him and fellow South African artists to international success. He founded Stimela with whom he achieved gold and platinum-selling album statuses.
In a tribute South Africa’s Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa described Phiri as ‘one of a kind’.
