Hugh Masekela dies
South African music legend Hugh Masekela has died.
A family statement read:
After a protracted and courageous battle with prostate cancer, he passed peacefully in Johannesburg, South Africa, surrounded by his family.
He had been receiving treatment since 2008.
Late last year he had to cancel a few gigs as treatment intensified.
Masekela was 78.
South Africa’s Arts Minister Nathi Mthetwa expressed his sorrow via his Twitter account:
A baobab tree has fallen, the nation has lost a one of a kind musician with the passing of Jazz legend bra Hugh Masekela. We can safely say bra Hugh was one of the great architects of Afro-Jazz and he uplifted the soul of our nation through his timeless music. #RIPBraHughMasekela pic.twitter.com/JVy47GA6aU
