Cool Crooners Set For Book Cafe Stage
The legendary Cool Crooners will perform at the Book Cafe this Saturday, we can reveal.
This year Abel Sithole and Tims Sekane turn 80! That is four score. After nearly 60 years in the profession they’ve still got the moves and the harmonies. Joined on stage by showman Lucky Thodhlana and relative newcomer George Salim who grounds the group with his fine baritone – the Cool Crooners are a musical treat not to be missed.
For the un-schooled, the quartet started off in the 1950s as two bands, Golden Rhythm Crooners and the Cool Four. They were among the first to delve into ‘township music’. In the 90s the surviving members of the group formed the Cool Crooners showcasing a unique fusion of American be-bop and jazz with Ndebele rhythms.
They have 2 CDs under their belts: ‘Blue Sky’ featuring Abel and Lucky together with Ben Gumbo and Eric Juba ( now both late), and ‘Isatilo’, (Abel, Lucky, Eric and Tims) with special guest Prudence Katomene.
This year’s HIFA opening is about the journey from darkness into light and the Crooners will join other local and international musicians on stage in this year’s grand opening spectacle directed by American Brooke Ciardelli and with musical direction by renowned SA saxophonist Steve Dyer.
