Clive Chigubu, Gonyeti, Q Dube join Mpho Popps for #Shoko2017 comedy
Festival goers are set for a great time with the impressive comedy line-up set for Shoko 2017. The comedy line up on Friday 29th and Saturday the 30th of September 2017 will be headlined by top South African comedian Mpho Popps alongside leading Zimbabwe comedians Clive Chigubu and Gonyeti.
The Shoko Festival main venue will be the Zimbabwe Museum of Human Sciences.
Mpho Popps is a regular on the South African comedy circuit who has shared the stage with renowned comedians Trevor Noah and Marc Lottering. He has performed at various regional and international shows including David Kau’s national comedy tour: Blacks Only, the Just Because Comedy Festival at the Market Theatre, Gold Reef City’s loads of laughs and the legendary Laugh Factory and Comedy Store in Los Angeles. You also recognise him as the face of the MiWay insurance campaign.
Performing alongside Mpho Popps on Sat the 30th of Sept are leading Zimbabwe comedians Gonyeti, Mandla Da Comedian, Tinaye and Q Dube (MC).
Gonyeti is currently one of the country’s most prominent comedians, best known for her work on Bustop TV, an online show that known tackles real-life issues through comedy. Festival goers can also expect entertaining performances from Tinaye, a young comedian who finds inspiration for his comedy from his personal experiences, and Mandla da Comedian, a versatile comedian returning to the Shoko stage after a crowd-pleasing performance in 2015. The MC for the night will be Q Dube, a familiar face on the Shoko stage who will keep crowds laughing throughout the night’s performances.
Friday the 29th of September will see high energy performances from Clive Chigubu, who uses his lightning fast wit and rapport to engage with audiences. He will perform alongside the Shoko Festival Top Comedian Winner of 2016, Patrick Zindoga, and Zimbabwe’s most infamous comedy news presenters, Zambezi News, consisting of Comrade Fatso, Michael K and Outspoken. The MC for the evening will be multitalented stand-up comedian and founder of Madhorofiya Republik, King Kandoro.
Shoko’s comedy nights have always been one of the main highlights of the festival bringing in top international acts such as Donovan Goliath, Tol ASS Mo, Loyiso Gola and Chester Missing over the years. “We love promoting different art forms and stand up comedy in Zimbabwe has grown exponentially in the last 5 years” says Shoko Festival Coordinator, Natalie Kombe, “Laughter really does make a positive difference in people’s lives so we will continue to celebrate stand up comedy in order to contribute to it becoming a more financially feasible career path for young comedians.”
Shoko Festival is Zimbabwe’s leading festival of urban culture taking place from the 29th to the 30th of September at the Zimbabwe Museum of Human Sciences and Unit L Chitungwiza on the 1st of October 2017.
