A moment with… Fitness Bae
Mercy ‘Fitness Bae’ Mukwamba is a Fitness Consultant, Fitness and Lifestyle Blogger.
She started August 2014 and has not stopped since then. Fitness Bae started working out on my own but over time she has had friends, family and strangers join in on my journey to a healthy lifestyle.
It’s all hard work, determination and a thirst for more knowledge that has helped me get to my target weight. I managed to lose 10kgs in a year without having to enter a single gym. All the activities I do and still do are affordable and do not break my budget.
She often creates challenges and has myriads following them.
Fitness Bae took time out of her busy schedule
What is your government name?
What do you like to call yourself?
I like to call myself a lot of things. Most people call me MaKupsy because that’s the name of my blog and the same name I use on all my social media pages. They also know me as Fitness Bae because of my fitness addiction… I can safely say I like to call myself either one of the two at any given time.
What is the most ridiculous nickname you have ever had?
Makpussy like seriously?!
Which side of the bed do you sleep on?
All over the bed, the beauty of sleeping alone.
Are you left-handed or right-handed?
What is your favourite instrument?
The piano. I think it’s the most beautiful instrument ever made. There was a time I could play the national anthem when I was still in Primary School but once I got to High School my interests shifted to sport.
What is the first song you fell in love with?
How Will I Know by Whitney Houston
Best concert you have ever been to?
The Hifa Opening Show where Mokoomba featured; I have never been moved by live music the way I did that day, I fell in love with their music instantly!
Of the challenges you have started, which one is your favourite?
I like the one where we have rest day and get to relax. Just kidding! My favourite is the running challenge. I like it because I get out of my comfort zone and push myself to the limit. There are very fast runners in the #RunWithFitnessBae group so the pressure is real!
How do you deal with groupies?
I greet them with a warm smile, sometimes a hug if I am feeling particularly happy and I always ask what their social media handle is.
How excited were you when the first groupie hollered at you?
Excited isn’t the word I would use. Surprised rather! I remember the first groupie walked up to me and told me he sees me each morning when I go out for my run on his way to work. I was surprised that people were actually paying attention to my running addiction.
Where is Zimbabwean fitness and wellness going?
I attend a lot of fitness events and the number of people who come through for them just shows that Zimbabweans have finally decided to get off the couch and go out and exercise! People are paying attention to their bodies and making the decision to lead a healthier life. I think health and fitness will go big because most people are ready and willing to learn how to take better care of themselves.
Where is your career going?
My career is certainly taking a very interesting twist. When I started my journey it was something I was doing for myself. I was and still am surprised at the number of people who get in touch with me to tell me how much my journey has inspired them to start exercising as well. I have plans for #RunWithFitnessBae that are going to take Harare and the world over by surprise. No one is ready for the ideas I have lined up. It will be a fun-filled journey that will continue to be educative, motivating and and above all inspiring. I can’t tell you all the details because that will kill the fun but starting end of this month watch out for me world, Fitness Bae is going to be taking over!
What do you want to be remembered for?
I want to be remembered for being the goal getter that I am. The woman who is inspired each day to do something that motivates not only herself but everyone around her. I want people to remember that where fitness was concerned I was their go to person and you could ask me the same thing over and over again and I would still help because that’s who I am and that’s just how much I love fitness!
