Nigerian singer-songwriter Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo popularly known as D’banj is fast becoming an international sensation with his hit song “Oliver Twist”
The song “Oliver Twist” has been rocking most parties in Africa and is also taking off in a big way in America. The song has also gone viral with a bunch of cover versions on Ytube including one by Grammy winner Estelle.
D’banj was born in 1980 in Nigeria but later moved to England were his professional music career began. He then returned to Nigeria were he has been working with a number musical acts. D’banj has won several music awards including the awards for Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007, Artist of the Year at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2009 and BET Awards of 2011 for Best International Act; Africa. D’banj also plays the harmonica.
In June 2011, D’banj along with his producer Don Jazzy of the Nigerian record label, MoHits Records, were both signed to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music record label as artiste and producer respectively.
The success of artist like D’banji, P-Square, Akon and others is testament that African artists can be successful on the international scene while maintaining their African musical elements.
On a side note the new Oliver Twist video confirms the rumour that D’banj and his business partner Don Jazzy were separated. Don Jazzy is conspicuously absent from the video and numerous reports seem to suggest the two are unlikely to unite anytime soon. The former long -time friends were also co-owners of Mo’Hits Records, one of Nigeria’s vibrant record companies.
