About That @ Econet Wireless SMS Tag

Bookmark and Share

Loads of people have been going tits-up about Econet’s latest change to our usual comforts. This time it has to do with them appending a message with an @ Econet Wireless tag.

With the way people have been acting up you would think that Econet had been found to be directly responsible for the death of Jesus Christ, the Prophet Mohammed, season 2 and 3 of Prison Break, Manchester United’s being consigned to the Europa League and Zimbabwe’s failure to host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2000 all in one.

People need to calm down. It is only an appendage. You are not paying extra for the message and in reality it doesn’t do any harm to your phone. In fact it is in a different line so you know where your message ends and when they put their tag line.

Some say that if Econet is going put their signature to each text then they must charge less. Some site the example of free SMS services who do add a tag to their SMS. The difference is that Econet is not taking any of your 160 characters away from you. You can still text a full message and the @ Econet Wireless part costs you nothing.

To be fair I think that people are just looking for any reason to complain about Econet but trust me, we don’t think they put that tag because they hate you or that they don’t care about you, in particular.

There are loads of other things to worry and complain about people. This we do not think, is that important.

We mad coz Econet takes takes takes and just never gives! so wat am i gonna do? imma switch to bloody telecel.

    @ econet wireless

    • http://www.3-mob.com Three Men On A Boat

But what did they take here?

  • thor

I completely disagree with you, the problem is that we the users have paid for that message, personally if I send a personal message or an important business related message I don’t want to see a silly tag at the end of it. it is absolutely useless.

    @ econet wireless

    • Maggie

I agree with Thor, if we pay for a premium service, it is not EcoNet’s right to use our messages as a bilboard to advertise to those we communicate with.
Not only that, but they even lied to us as subscribers, telling us that this was some technical “verification service” which is total rubbish.
Maybe if they had been honest and said this is our new marketing campaign, then maybe, just maybe, I wouldn’t mind as much. But what really sucks is they lied to us and treated us like imbecils.

If that’s their corporate attitude to their subscribers, then I’m off to use someone else who actually respects their customers.

      • http://www.3-mob.com Three Men On A Boat

Well do you think it will go away? I mean really, at the end of the day I think we have bigger issues to take Econet to task on

        • Aaaaa

we should, how else will they know, we need quality . . in as much as yu try to defend eco . . their @econet wireless is irritating, who knows what they will do next . . in fact i feel they dont know how to remove it, y else wld it still be there, after so many complaints

  • http://www.3-mob.com Three Men On A Boat

And how does the @ econet wireless take anything away from the message?

    • Aaaa

it is irritating, we do not want it, do we not have a right to say what we want or do not want, after all we pay for the service. There is no defending this man . .

  • Liscious

I disagree too. Yes there will always be “bigger things” to worry about but that in itself is not reason enough to stop people from being mad about it. To each his own but every customer has a right to feel however it is they feel about the service they are getting. By your logic, its like sying don’t write about Movado not coming to Zim because there are “bigger things” to worry about. We all have a right to question the service we are getting.

    • http://www.3-mob.com Three Men On A Boat

No, I am saying don’t go tits-up about so hectically about something so not important. What has it taken away from your SMS experience

      • Liscious

Again “not important” is relative, and as with nearly everything in life can be argued for or against. Are you saying that if people don’t like it, they should shut up about it? All this fuss is probably an accumulation of frustration at terrible network connection, constant spamming of unwanted sms’s from econet (remember those ecolife messages at 2 am), now their advertising on our paid for sms’s. I’m not a network engineer or whatever you call it but surely there are already security systems in the background to authenticate sms’s. I also know that econets “ID” is +26377. you can be anywhere in the world but that first sequence of digits is econets. so what is this reasoning that its a “security measure”??? really? heck, a telecel subscriber could type in “@econet wireless” at the end of their sms!! what does that prove? It may be a small thing but the principal is that something is amiss.

        • http://www.3-mob.com Three Men On A Boat

i guess it is the Microsoft effect. when you are the biggest people will always take pot-shots at you

          • Liscious

I think we’re going in circles now. call my grievance what you may. the funny thing is I see your logic, but just because you are right, that doesn’t automatically make me and others like me wrong. try and look at it from the “other side” also

          • http://www.3-mob.com Three Men On A Boat

I find a lot of things in life irritating. The thing is, are they big enough a deal to go tits-up about? And how much do they actually take away from my experience in whatever I am doing.

  • Donydotz

dude, the thing is they first have to consult us as their faithful clients if we buy into the idea or not. besides it is just irritating and annoying to receive text message with that stupid signature. whether they like it or not, their clients hate the idea and they should just drop it before people walk out on them. i am totally against the signature shit and they shopuld do something about it

    • http://www.3-mob.com Three Men On A Boat

You are totally against because you are totally against it. Not for any real reason then

  • Ben10

hmmm let me clarify. If you explain to me that by all means your service is top class i walk away with the impression that i shall PAY for and then GET top class service. I value my service in three main ways Value for money, services offered and of course customer care. On every single occasion that i call in a complaint to Eco i normally get zip the CC and that boils down to zip the service. i understand what its like to man a help desk and yes ur users can be a bit rough round the edges but sorry such is business and of course suck is life.
Take take take, u take my money , u fail to acknowledge my existence in ur business world (as the source of ur wealth) and when i really frustrated and really mad that once again friday nite 5pm the network is down u can still put a lil tag in my texts lol!
    u get me now?

    @econet wireless

    • http://www.3-mob.com Three Men On A Boat

So your dislike of econet has nothing to do with the tag then

  • Oldschoolvalues

Imagine i send a message saying ‘craziness and pomposity is found’ and its ended @ econet wireless! because that would be just right! Someone is bored and trying to justify their job, so they come up with a tag at the end of an econet subscribers message. For them what value does it add? We already know who they are, we already know that 077 is econet, We already know that they are trying to show how big they are. They claim its so we know that the message is genuinely from Econet. Am trying for the life of me trying to understand which network would try to masquerade as Econet and try and get away with it? They are taking us for granted and for me that is wrong. You ask what does it take away from me, it takes away from me my feeling of goodwill towards Econet. It reduces my respect for them and increases my wish that Telecel / NetOne get their acts together so we can switch over, or that MTN comes to Zimbabwe. You say dont sweat the small stuff, you are looking at this issue as a stand alone, the reason people are mostly upset is because its a culmination of abuses against us by econet. From changing over to US$ unceremoniously, removing everybody from contract to Buddie, then asking us to re-apply for lines. selling us life cover that no longer exists, which they are yet to communicate. We are reaching the point of OK Enough is ENOUGH!

    • http://www.3-mob.com Three Men On A Boat

      eh

  • http://twitter.com/imanyere Itai Manyere

The essence of making a move in business , be it advertising or whatever initiatove, is to make an impression and have people talking. Econet did just that because for the past 2 to 3 weeks people have been talking about @Econet Wireless. People have complained but i dont think any have been so annoyed to switch networks.. *train of thought*

    • http://www.3-mob.com Three Men On A Boat

Well the winner here is Econet.

  • Lilzjob

This dude is a idiot based on his logic we shudnt even complain about zesa or bad water supply coz well their are children in Somalia that are starving so that’s more important. If a small thing is a problem to me and a few other customers if u truly care about the customer a option to solve it shud be made.

    • http://www.3-mob.com Three Men On A Boat

All we are saying is that how does the existence of the @Econet Wireless tag make that much of a difference. All we hear people say is they don’t like it, but what is the difference. Is it changing your message in any way? In essence, why does it matter that much?

The thing that pisses me off more about Econet is the fact that messages don’t arrive on time, they drop calls, crossed lines, services sometimes don’t work without warning…

Am I gonna bother about an @ Econet Wireless tag? Not really

      • Liscious

This is a matter of prinicipal as well dude. the reason they gave for the tag is flimsy which suggests that they take us for fools. it may be a “small thing” but it makes me feel taken for granted and judging by the comments section here and on econets facebook page, a lot of people are grieved about it. just because you’re not, it doesn’t render everyones elses view unworthy or not worth the bother.

        • http://www.3-mob.com Three Men On A Boat

So what you are saying is, they hurt your feelings
